Reinstall Chat for a more reliable experienceUpdated a year ago

On August 28, 2025, Shopify is deprecating their ScriptTags resource — an older developer tool that Gorgias used previously to install the Chat widget on Shopify stores. In preparation for this deprecation, we upgraded our Chat widget to use Theme Extensions, a more modern and reliable alternative to ScriptTags.

If you integrated a Shopify store to your Gorgias and installed a Chat widget prior to June 3, 2024, we highly recommend reinstalling the widget to move onto the latest version of Chat and ensure the best long-term experience.

Reinstall Chat

Follow the steps below to reinstall Chat to your store and upgrade your widget to the latest version.

1. From your helpdesk, click the Settings icon in the bottom-left corner.
2. In the sidebar, locate Channels, then select Chat.
3. Select a Chat integration from the list.
4. Click the Installation tab.
5. Next to Quick installation for Shopify, click Uninstall.
6. Click Install. Then, if you’d like, click the Pencil icon to specify the pages where the Chat widget should appear.

With the new framework, you can also install Chat on your Checkout and Thank You pages. To do this, click Install next to Shopify checkout and thank you pages.

Do I need to reinstall Chat?

Brands that integrated a Shopify store and installed Chat before June 3, 2024 should reinstall Chat to access the latest version. If that’s you, you’ll see a banner on the Chat settings in Gorgias prompting you to reinstall. If you integrated your Shopify store after June 3, 2024, or if you used the Manual Installation method to install Chat on another ecommerce platform or website, you don’t need to reinstall Chat.

Why should I reinstall?

We recommend reinstalling to upgrade your Chat widget for a few reasons. Namely:

Prevent disruption
As Shopify phases out ScriptTags, Chat widgets built on this resource may eventually stop working. By reinstalling, you’ll avoid any risk of a broken chat experience for your customers.

Future-proof your setup
The latest Chat widget built with Theme Extensions uses Shopify’s recommended framework. With this update, the Chat widget is more flexible, and better aligned with Shopify’s platform updates — so you’ll always be on a supported, stable setup.

Unlock new opportunities
You can install the latest Chat widget to your checkout and thank you pages — something not possible with the earlier version. This means you’ll be able to engage with customers during critical stages of their shopping journey.

What happens if I don’t reinstall right now?

For now, the earlier version of the Chat widget will continue to work on your Shopify store. Once Shopify fully deprecates ScriptTags, the widget may no longer function. To avoid disruptions and take advantage of new features, we strongly recommend reinstalling as soon as possible.
