Manage Gorgias notificationsUpdated 3 days ago

Gorgias sends browser notifications to help you respond to customers the moment a new chat message arrives or a ticket is assigned to you. You can configure notification sounds from within Gorgias, and use your browser settings to enable or disable the notifications themselves.

Requirements

How notifications work

Gorgias sends a browser notification when:

  • A new message comes in on a real-time messaging channel (chat, Instagram DMs, Messenger, WhatsApp, etc.)
  • A ticket of any type is assigned to you

Whether you receive notifications for every new chat ticket — or only tickets assigned to you — depends on your helpdesk’s ticket assignment setting:

  • Auto-assignment on, and you're online — you'll only receive notifications for tickets assigned to you.
  • Auto-assignment off, and you're online — you'll receive notifications for every new chat-type ticket that comes in.

Adjust your Gorgias notification settings

From your notification settings, you can change the sound Gorgias plays for each event type, adjust notification volume, or turn browser notifications off entirely.

  1. From your helpdesk, click the Notifications icon in the top-left corner.
  2. Click the gear icon.
  3. Adjust the volume, select a sound, and turn notifications for specific events on or off as needed.
  4. Click Save changes.

Enable browser notifications

Your browser must be allowed to send notifications from your Gorgias helpdesk. The steps vary by browser. If you're on macOS, you may also need to allow notifications at the system level — see Apple's support documentation for instructions.

Chrome

  1. Open your Gorgias helpdesk in Chrome.
  2. Click the icon to the left of the page's URL in the address bar.
  3. Click Site settings.
  4. Next to Notifications, select Allow.

Microsoft Edge

You'll need to allow notifications in two places: Windows system settings and the Edge browser itself.

In Windows:

  1. Click Start, then open Settings.
  2. Go to System, then click Notifications.
  3. Scroll down to Notifications from apps and other senders and find Microsoft Edge.
  4. Make sure the toggle is set to On.

In Edge:

  1. Click the three-dot menu in the upper-right corner of Edge, then select Settings.
  2. Go to Cookies and site permissions, then click Notifications.
  3. Under Allow, click Add and enter your Gorgias helpdesk URL.

Safari

Safari manages Gorgias notification sounds through its auto-play settings. To allow notification sounds to play:

  1. Open your Gorgias helpdesk in Safari.
  2. Right-click the URL in the address bar.
  3. Click Settings for [your helpdesk].
  4. Under Auto-Play, select Allow All Auto-Play.

Disable browser notifications

Chrome

To block notifications from your helpdesk in Chrome:

  1. Open Chrome and click the three-dot menu in the top-right corner.
  2. Click Settings.
  3. Go to Privacy and security, then Site settings, then Permissions, then Notifications.
  4. Under Not allowed to send notifications, click Add and enter your helpdesk's web address.

Alternatively, right-click the tab title in your browser and select Mute site to silence notification sounds for that tab without changing your site permissions.

Microsoft Edge

  1. Click the three-dot menu in the upper-right corner of Edge, then select Settings.
  2. Go to Cookies and site permissions, then click Notifications.
  3. Under Block, click Add and enter your Gorgias helpdesk URL.

Safari

  1. Right-click the URL of your helpdesk in Safari.
  2. Click Settings for [your helpdesk].
  3. Under Auto-Play, select Stop media with sound.

FAQ

Why am I receiving notifications for every chat, not just my tickets?

This happens when auto-assignment is turned off. When auto-assignment is off, Gorgias notifies all online agents of incoming chat tickets so someone can pick them up. If you only want notifications for tickets assigned to you, ask an admin to enable auto-assignment.

I enabled browser notifications but I'm not hearing any sound — what's wrong?

Check two things. First, confirm your notification sound isn't set to silent and your volume isn't at zero under Settings → Profile → Notifications. Second, if you're on Safari, make sure Auto-Play is set to Allow All Auto-Play for your helpdesk (see the Safari enable instructions above), since Safari requires this for notification sounds to play.

Do browser notifications work on mobile?

Browser notifications as described here apply to desktop browsers. For mobile, use the Gorgias mobile app, which has its own notification settings managed through your phone's system notification preferences.
